Bynea 50m individual time trial.

Another early morning start. This time we all pile into lee braziers van with escobar and tom in escobars shagging wagon. Long neck is a no show. He’s proper poorly. Caught some bug thats going around that most of the boys caught after those 10 pints of stella.

The drive up is normal ,i’m in the back trying to sleep ,fab , ithink watches me like a hawk and just as I am nodding off he says something to me which jars me awake. He never gets bored of this and it amuses him like the first time every time. Getting to know Lee and beginning to understand he is more of a loose canon than all of us put together. There’s a good turn out today for nbcc , Nick , keiron, Me, tom, escobar,Mike,Lee,90 and Paul

As the journey progresses it degenerates into a trip down drug taking rave memory lane. Lee was quite the man and we had a lot of mutual experiences. We arrive at the start with ‘swamp thing’ by the grid blaring out the pa. Everyone is very impressed and John Sheehan turned quickly to see wtf is that noise and put his back out. He missed the race.

We get our shit together and there’ a lot of nerves here today.Mike,Paul and lees first 50 . Its a 2 or 3 lap course and it looks like its going to be a quick day. Paul is 2 mins in front of me,Mike is 20 odd mins,Fab is 6 mins behind me and Nick brown is 12 mins.Nick has suggested he may catch the lot of us. Maybe a year ago but not today.

As usual none of us has bothered to read the start sheet and get lost on the way to the start.Which is amazingly straight forward. But its on a dual carriageway so once there there was nowhere to go to warm up.

As usual my minute man didn’t turn up. Off we went. I caught Paul for 2 mins in the first 4 miles , He got faster as the race went on. I spent the first lap repeating to myself ‘you are going out too hard you are fucking this up!’Power wasn’t far off a 10 m tt effort at around 270watts. (i’d done a disappointing ten the wednesday before to try to establish my ftp. It came in at 290 watts.Which was higher than the previous effort the month before but I wasn’t happy with it.) I caught Mike on the second lap and was still holding well over 270 watts on the flat. The back road was lumpy the dual carriage way was fast. By the third lap I knew it was on ,had caught a lot of people and hadn’t been caught ny anyone. I held the power all the way to the finished in 1hr 58 something or other for the 50mtt

Stoked. To cap it all I beat Nick by a hand full of seconds, Paul Coleman ,Will . Beating these boys (nick in particular) was difficult for me to get my head around. These guys, locally are the best and they are put on pedestals . I couldn’t quite get my head around beating them. All be it only the once. Nick was the first to shake my hand.Although I dont consider myself yet as one of the local ‘fastmen’ having my name perhaps mentioned in the same sentence as Nick Brown,Paul Coleman,Will Jenkins,John Reagan etc is enough

Lee brazier didn’t finish after a puncture. Escobar had a corker at just over 2 hours as did 90.Tom was only a handful of seconds behind. Fab had a solid performance as did Mike and Paul.

Escobar and I went for a run off the bike. Escobar did 30 mins I did 45. . Went quite well. Then onto kfc for a what is now becoming a post race tradition. Lees van was blowing hot air all the way back just like lee and a good time was had by all.

Post race analysis. Things learnt. 1)never go anywhere with Lee brazier

2) My power (ftp) from a ten m tt seems to be coming in a bit low. When I compare with the power I held for the 50. (puts my ftp around 300 watts)
3) Can I go harder .Nicks maximum hr is lower than mine yet his average hr for the ride was 3 beats per min higher than mine.
Keiron ,Myself and Nick won the team prize
